This endorsement comes ahead of her anticipated formal nomination by the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August, where she is set to face GOP nominee Donald Trump.
The WFP's endorsement allows Harris to bypass some of the procedural steps mandated by the DNC in New York, thanks to the state's vote fusion law. This law permits votes cast for a candidate by different parties to be combined into a single total, enhancing her chances in the state and nationally. In Oregon, where the WFP holds ballot status, Harris will appear on a single line with both parties listed. In states like Connecticut, Harris will run on the Democratic line with strong WFP support, The Nation reported.
Maurice Mitchell, WFP national director, emphasized the urgency of preventing Donald Trump and MAGA extremists from returning to power. He announced that 95% of the WFP's members, chapters, and leaders voted to support Harris. Although overshadowed by recent high-profile endorsements such as those from former President Obama and Michelle Obama, this endorsement provides Harris with a crucial edge. Historically, the WFP has played a pivotal role in securing victories for Democratic candidates in New York, such as the 386,613 votes it contributed to President Joe Biden and Harris's 2020 campaign.
The WFP's influence in New York politics is notable. Figures like New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have benefited from the WFP’s support. James, who started her political career with a WFP endorsement, has been a testament to the party's ability to propel candidates to significant political positions. Schumer, reelected in 2022, received nearly ten percent of his votes from the WFP line.

Leaders from these groups, including DaMareo Cooper and Analilia Mejia of the Center for Popular Democracy Action and Marta Popadiak of People’s Action, strongly supported Harris. They emphasized the administration’s progress towards an economy prioritizing working people over billionaires and a democracy protecting everyone’s freedoms.
Mitchell reiterated the significance of this election, stating that it transcends any individual and concerns the nation's future and the preservation of hard-won rights and freedoms. He urged the coalition to mobilize voters to elect Harris and strengthen the ranks of WFP champions across all levels of government.
