China’s increasing aggression towards building its military presence in the South China Sea as well as surrounding Taiwan has resulted in more tensions with other countries that have expressed strong opposition. An expert has now warned that China could easily start a world war now that it feels more confident towards its aggressive approach.
Political commentator and author Gordon Chang warned that China is becoming more confident in its acts of aggression that a world war could be triggered. Speaking with Express, Chang cited that the country’s diplomat has claimed that the US could not speak from a position of authority against China. Chang added that the deterrents are no longer as impactful now, which may prove to be a risk.
“A nuclear military conflict could happen. The reason is that deterrents are breaking down,” said Chang. “We know deterrents are breaking down because China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi in the middle of March actually came out and said the US could no longer talk to China from a position of strength,”
“China’s perception is that it can do what it wants, therefore it can do things that could lead to World War 3 for instance,” added Chang. “I’m not saying it will happen but I am saying the odds of it happening are unacceptably high.”
Chang also suggested that China’s aggression will lead to countries rallying together. China’s aggression has lead to rising tensions between the US, India, Taiwan, and Japan. Chang said that China is engaging in “increasingly provocative” behavior towards the other countries.
The tensions with North Korea have also led to fears of a world war. US Army General Paul LaCamera, who is US President Joe Biden’s nominee to become the Commander of the US Forces in Korea, warned that North Korea has not taken steps to denuclearize. LaCamera added that it is very unlikely that North Korea will surrender its nuclear stockpile and will continue to increase its nuclear arsenal.
Gen. LaCamera added that North Korea has showcased its newer nuclear missile and advanced ballistic fuel systems in 2020. The army general went on to say that in October 2020, North Korea showcased around 76 ballistic missile systems.
