Ajit Agarkar is the most renowned and decorated Indian cricketer who has represented the national side in more than 200 international matches across all the formats of the games. A Right-Handed Batsman and Medium Pacer, Agarkar represented India in the Test, ODI as well as the T-20 format. He was the former captain of the Mumbai cricket team.

Ajit Agarkar was born to Meena and Balachandra Agarkar on 4th December 1976 at Bombay City (present Mumbai) in Maharashtra. Ajit Agarkar has a sister named Manik Agarkar. Agarkar’s father was a local businessman and his mother is a homemaker. He was backed by his father who encouraged him to pursue a career in cricket.

Agarkar was entrusted to his first coach Ramakant Achrekar by his father at the age of 11. On his suggestion, he shifted his school from IES to Shardashram Vidyamandir in Dadar. Agarkar initially started his career as a batsman with pure class and talent. He later shifted his attention towards bowling to become an all-rounder.

Ajit Agarkar got trained as an elegant batsman under Achrekar sir. He developed his skills and represented his school team at the U-16 Giles Shield Tournament at the age of 15. In a spectacular start to his career, Agarkar scored a triple century and was subsequently selected to play at the U-19 Harris Shield Trophy.

Agarkar shifted his attention towards bowling when he was pointed out that it will be difficult for him to get into the Mumbai side as a pure batsman. He toiled hard in the nets and his small misjudgment of the game led to the formation of a world-class bowler. Agarkar started to play for his club as a bowler and achieved success.

Ajit Agarkar performed brilliantly as an all-rounder at the U-19 Harris Shield Trophy that subsequently led to his selection in the Mumbai Cricket team. He played for Mumbai at the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy where he impressed the selectors with his impressive performance and was soon called for the national team.

Ajit Agarkar was busy with the national team for most of the time in his career. Ajit Agarkar was named as the captain of Mumbai’s cricket team for the 2012 season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. After a misery at the 50-over cup, Mumbai team selectors and management decided to try his luck at the first-class Ranji Trophy season 2012-13.

Under Ajit Agarkar’s captaincy, Mumbai won its 40th Ranji Trophy title in a convincing style. Agarkar’s performance lacked the standards in the initial phase of the season but he returned with a perfect approach in the knockouts stage. Agarkar scored 53 in the quarterfinals and 145 in the semifinals to ensure that Mumbai sails in the championship.

In his 103 first-class appearances for Mumbai, Agarkar scored 3117 runs with an average of 28.80 and picked up 315 wickets with 12 five-wicket hauls in the line. Agarkar also had a decorated List A career as he scored 2252 runs with an average of 17.73 and scalped 412 wickets with three five-wicket hauls in his career.

Ajit Agarkar made his debut for the Indian national cricket team in a Test match against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club in 1998. He had an excellent test debut as he was economical and wicket-taking in his inaugural test. His performance at the test series ensured his selection in the ODI team where he made his debut against Australia in 1998.

Agarkar’s debut embarked his maiden ODI wicket of Adam Gilchrist at the Nehru Stadium. He received praise and appreciation and was subsequently selected in the 1999 World Cup. Agarkar continued to be a consistent part of the Indian team in the Test and ODI format. His significant all-around performance led to his retention in the team.

Ajit Agarkar represented India in 191 ODI matches and scored 1269 runs and picked up a record 288 wickets. He had a limited 26 test appearances where he scored a mere 539 runs and scalped 46 wickets. Ajit also tried his luck in the shortest T-20 format where he played only 4 T-20I’s and claimed 3 wickets with a healthy economy.

Ajit Agarkar is renowned as one of the fine performers for India in all formats. Agarkar rose to glory with some unique stints in his career. He was known for his cameos and scored the fastest fifty by an Indian in an ODI against Zimbabwe of just 21 balls. He was also one of the few tail-enders to score a century against England at the Lord’s stadium in 2002.

Agarkar played a valuable role in India’s historic test win against Australia at Adelaide with a career-best figure of 6/31 as India defeated Australia on their home soil after 20 years. His highest score in ODI of 95 came against West Indies in a record braking chase and he also ensured a steep chase against Zimbabwe in 2004 where he scored 40 runs of 16 balls.

Ajit Agarkar tried his fortune at the Indian Premier League as he was picked by the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise at the inaugural season in 2008. He was a regular bowler for the franchise in the first couple of seasons but was then flanked out due to injuries after which he was released in 2010. At the 2011 IPL auction, the Delhi Daredevils franchise picked Ajit Agarkar as he performed for the franchise in a couple of seasons.

Ajit Agarkar finally announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on 5th April 2013 before the start of Ranji Trophy season 2013-14.
