Ambati Rayudu Biography – A fluent stroke maker with promising abilities, Ambati Rayudu is touted as India’s most versatile and elegant batsman. Often in the talks due to clashes with the authorities, Rayudu made his international career short-lived. However, he never failed to express himself as a sharp attacker with enormous skills to bat mesmerizingly in every format.

A limited-over specialist batsman, Rayudu hailed from the cricketing backwaters of Andhra Pradesh and nurtured his skills to display exquisite gameplay. Ambati Rayudu was born on 23rd September 1985 at Guntur town in Andhra Pradesh state. Rayudu’s father Sambasiva Rao worked at the archives department of the state government. His mother Vijayalakshmi is a homemaker. He has a couple of cousins siblings and currently, his family resides in the Hyderabad City of Telangana.

Rayudu’s father is his greatest inspiration and the reason accredited to his successful career. Sambasiva Rao took Rayudu to a cricket coaching camp when he was studying in third grade. He used to watch Ambati practicing in the nets and also enrolled him in former Indian cricketer Vijay Paul’s academy in 1992. This was the start of something very big for Rayudu.

Ambati Rayudu represented his school team at the U-15 and U-16 levels. He practiced with the youth teams players in the 1990s and developed his game to feature in the U-19 level. Rayudu was picked in India’s squad for the ACC Under-15 Trophy 2000 where he emerged as the leading run-scorer of the tournament and bagged the Man of the Match award in the final against the arch-rivals Pakistan.

Rayudu’s victorious run at the ACC Trophy caught the eyes of Hyderabad state teams selectors who called him to represent the senior team in 2002 when he was at the age of just 16. Rayudu made it to the Indian U-19 team in 2003 and was the captain of the team for the ICC U-19 World Cup that took place in Bangladesh.

Ambati Rayudu sparked his career with glorious innings in the start. The turning point of his career was his brilliant knock at the Ranji Trophy 2002-03 season for Hyderabad. Rayudu smashed 698 runs with an average of 69.80 in his golden span and became the youngest cricketer to smash a double century and a century in the same match against Andhra Pradesh.

Rayudu was then picked for the India A’s tour to England and West Indies where he had a successful stint and was nearing his international debut. However, he came back to India and played for India Seniors at the NKV Salve Challengers Trophy where he failed miserably and his problem of facing the short ball was discovered that worried the selectors.

Rayudu did not look back and performed consistently for the Hyderabad team. He scored 666 runs at the Ranji Trophy 2012-13 and averaged 81 at India A tour to England in 2013. This guaranteed his Indian cap as he made his debut in 2013. In his 97 first-class matches, Rayudu has scored 6151 runs and 5336 runs in List A of 167 matches.

The ICL Fiasco

The introduction of the Indian Cricket League haunted Rayudu’s glowing career in 2007. The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) had announced that the players taking part in the ICL will be banned from playing domestic cricket. Despite the official statement, Rayudu along with six other Indian cricketers joined the league.

Rayudu was set to play at the ICL in 2009 and before that the BCCI made an offer to the cricketers to join the domestic cricket again. Rayudu saw the uprising IPL and his future in the Indian team and finally bid adieu to the ICL and joined the Hyderabad cricket team. He was later picked by the Mumbai Indians franchise at the IPL.

Rayudu made his international debut in a second-string Indian team against Zimbabwe in July 2013. He scored an unbeaten knock of 63 runs alongside Virat Kohli and ensured that India clean sweep the series. He was then a continuous part of the Indian team but was chosen as a reserve batsman for the home series against Australia, South Africa, West Indies, and Asia Cup 2013 where he featured in only a couple of matches.

Rayudu was provided with an opportunity to perform against England and Australia in the tri-nation series where he averaged above 20. Following a good run, Rayudu was picked in India’s 15-member squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. However, he did not feature in any of the games and later played against Zimbabwe in an overseas tour.

Rayudu’s stint continued to shine as he had a memorable IPL in 2018. Despite this, the selectors picked Vijay Shankar at his place which left him anguished and he decided to retire from cricket but returned in 2020. In 61 international appearances for India, Rayudu has scored 1736 runs with an average of 44.05.

Ambati Rayudu was picked by the Mumbai Indians franchise at the 2010 IPL auctions. Rayudu was the key performer for Mumbai in the season where the franchise reached their first finals in 2010. Rayudu continued to be a consistent part of the team and scored valuable runs in the middle as Mumbai won the IPL title in 2013, 2015, and 2017.

After a sloppy 2017 season, Mumbai Indians released Rayudu who was bought by Chennai Super Kings in 2018.
