Covid-19 Crisis: Mucormycosis declared epidemic in 4 States and an Union Territory

The second wave of the novel Coronavirus pandemic continues to hamper India as 4,209 succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours. Even when the second wave is not under control, a new fungal infection has started to infect people who have recovered from Covid-19. This infection occurs in the form of ‘Black Fungus’ and is known as Mucormycosis.

Many of the Indian States saw rise in the number of patients suffering from Mucormycosis. Maharashtra, Telangana, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and the Union Territory of Chandigarh have reported a spike in the number of black fungus patients. Many deaths due to the fungal infection have been reported by 3 states.

Maharashtra alone reported more than 1,500 confirmed cases of Mucormycosis. Health Minister Rajesh Tope had yesterday mentioned to talk about the spike to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ask for Centre’s help. Maharashtra will provide free treatment to all the patients suffering from Black Fungus under the Mahatma Jyotibai Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. 1,90,000 doses of Amphoceritin, the medicine needed to treat the fungus have been ordered.

Haryana reported 226 cases while Telangana alone reported 80 cases. The Central Government has asked the States to declare Black Fungus as an Epidemic by making it a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897. Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territory of Chandigarh have declared Mucormycosis as an Epidemic.

Why is Mucormycosis spreading rapidly?

According to Health Experts, the steroids used to treat highly infected covid patients are making them lose their immunity. The use of Remdesivir to treat the same set of people is increasing their sugar level. Low immunity and high sugar sets perfect conditions for Mucormycosis to enter into human body. Also, covid patients undergoing oxygen therapy in ICU’s where humidifier is used are more prone to contact the fungal infection due to moisture.

How to treat Mucormycosis?

Mucormycosis should be diagnosed earlier to stop its spread. Early symptoms include severe headache, pain in jaws, runny nose and pain in eyes. Suspected patients should report to the doctor at earliest for them to perform a surgery and remove the infected area. After the surgery, Ampotericin injection is given to patients for complete recovery.

To avoid the spread of Mucormycosis, it is necessary for covid recovered patients to stay hygienic. For the Remdesivir used patients, it is necessary to maintain your sugar levels. Also, have high protein food to boost your immunity. Stay Safe and do not step out of your house unless necessary.
