David Warner BiographyDavid Warner is an Australian cricket batsman, very well known for his explosive batting style and aggressive gameplay. He has been an essential part of the team since 2008 and over the years has become an Australian cricketing legend. Warner plays as a left-handed opening batsman for the Australian team and performs much better in the limited-overs format of the game.

He is a former skipper for the Australian ODI and T20i teams on various occasions and only ever lost 1 international match as a captain. He is also one of the most successful overseas players in the IPL and led the Sunrisers Hyderabad side for the longest duration of around 6 years. Having always been a source of controversy, Warner has been in the news for various reasons, both good and bad. However, with his consistency and performance he has become a fan favorite loved equally by Australians as well as Indians.

David Warner was born on 27th October 1986 to Howard and Lorraine Warner in Paddington, an eastern Sydney suburb. Warner was passionate about cricket right from his childhood and always had his parents’ support to pursue a career in the game.

He attended the Matraville Public School and Randwick Boys High School as a kid and being a child prodigy in cricket was never really very bright in school. Hence, he spent most of his time developing his game and as a result broke the Sydney Coastal Cricket Clubs U-16 run-scoring record and hasn’t stopped making new benchmarks ever since.

David Warner was a cricket prodigy right from childhood and started playing in the Sydney Coastal Cricket Club at a very young age. In his early days, however, when he was 13 years old he was suggested by his coach to turn to right-handed batting because he kept hitting the ball in the air too much. But following his mother’s advice, he stayed a left-handed batsman and went on to become the club’s highest U-16 run-scorer.

Warner was an extraordinary player and made a lot of new records in his domestic career. In 2008, he became the highest Blues run-scorer after hitting his first domestic century playing for New South Wales against Tasmania. Also, playing for the same team he eventually broke Jimmy Mahers’ record and became the highest One-day run-scorer in Australian domestic cricket history.

Warner holds the record of the fastest half-century in KFC T20 Big Bash scoring 50 runs in just 18 balls. He was later named the captain of the Sydney Thunders in the revamped Big Bash League for only the 2011-12 season.

Warner has been one of the most successful players in IPL history having won 3 Orange caps. He has been a part of only two teams and had an amazing run as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad

Delhi Daredevils (2009-2013)

Warner was signed by the Delhi Daredevils in 2009 and he stayed with the franchise for 5 years. While in the team he became the first player to score two centuries in consecutive T20 matches ever in history, one against the Chennai Super Kings and the other against Royal Challengers Bangalore both of which came in the Champions League.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (2014-Present)

David Warner was then signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2014 IPL auctions and eventually named as Captain in the 2015 season. Playing for the franchise, he had a great chance to showcase his skills as a skipper. As a result, he took the team to great heights and even won them their first-ever Championship title in 2016. But after the ball-tampering controversy that hit him in 2018, he faced a temporary one-year ban from the IPL as well and couldn’t play for the 2018 season.

But after returning as captain in 2019, he did not lose his form and went on to win the Orange Cap for the 3rd time. In the 2021 season, he was replaced by Kane Williamson as the Captain after a bad start in the second leg of the season and was eventually dropped out from the team.

Warner has also played for the Sylhet Sixers in the Bangladesh Premier League in 2019 and also been a part of the Canada T20 tournament in 2018 when he started playing for the Winnipeg Hawks and was eventually named Captain for the season after Dwayne Bravo was injured.

Warner made his international debut for Australia in 2009 in a T20i match against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He then made his test debut in 2011 against New Zealand in Brisbane after Shane Watson was injured. 

Even though he didn’t have the best test debut, he still managed to have an excellent test career ahead. In his 87 International tests played, he scored over 7400 runs with 24 centuries, 2 double-centuries, and even a triple century to his name being only the 7th Australian batsman to ever be able to do so. Even in his ODI career, he has been rather above average having scored 5455 runs in the 128 matches he played and even made 18 centuries. Whereas in his T20 career, having played 88 matches he has scored 2554 runs at a strike rate of 140+ which is very exceptional. 

He has even been Captain of the Australian International side for a few matches in 2016 and had a great run there as well, having lost only one out of the 12 matches that he played as the international captain.

  • In 2013 Warner was dropped from the team after he attacked Joe Root in a 2AM fight, after Australia lost to England in a match in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. Later he was also fined AU$ 11,500 and was kept off the team for quite some time.
  • In 2018, Warner was caught in a fight with Quinton De Kock who allegedly spoke ill about his wife Candice which led to a heated argument between the two. Warner was then fined with a Level 2 Offense and charged 75% of his match fees for the same.
  • In 2018, in the third test match against South Africa, Cameron Bancroft was caught using sandpaper to do ball-tampering and it was later found that Steve Smith and David Warner were also involved in the same. As a result, Warner was strapped off his leadership positions and banned from playing Australian cricket for one year, and was banned permanently from any leadership positions. He faced a lot of backlash following the same for defaming the game of cricket and even faced a one-year ban in the IPL and was stripped of his position as the Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain
