Devdutt Padikkal is a professional Indian cricketer who plays for the Karnataka State in domestic cricket and the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in the Indian Premier League. Padikkal made his debut for the Indian National Cricket Team in July 2021 against Sri Lanka. He had also represented the Indian U-19 Team.

Devdutt Padikkal is a Left-Handed Batsman who opens the innings for the teams he had and will play for.

Devdutt Padikkal was born on 7th July 2000 at Edappal district in Karnataka State. His father’s name is Babunu Kunnath whereas his mother’s name is Ambili Padikkal. He started to practice professional cricket at the very young age of 11. He was brought up in Bangalore and practiced professional cricket in the capital city as his parents were big fans of the game.

Early Days

Devdutt Padikkal was passionate about cricket from a very young age. He acquired professional coaching from the Karnataka Institute of Cricket. Naseeruddin was his first coach who equipped him with facing the short ball effectively. In his Under-14 and 16 levels, he had a bad run and failed to impress the administrators.

Padikkal’s development in professional cricket started with his representation in domestic leagues.

Devdutt Padikkal got his breakthrough in his domestic career with Karnataka. In 2017, Padikkal played for Bellary Tuskers in the Karnataka Premier League. He opened for his team and played a crucial knock of 72 runs against Bengaluru Blasters which turned out to be important for his career. He came under the limelight for his performance in the U-19 days.

Padikkal then suffered a major jolt as he was out of form for an entire season. However, setbacks are the biggest lessons of life. Padikkal soon bounced back and scored a massive 829 runs in the Cooch Behar Trophy of 2018. Owing to this magnificent performance by him, he received the Batsman of the Year award from the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

Padikkal’s great knock earned him a place at the Karnataka State Ranji Team. Devdutt made a good impression in his List-A debut as he scored a half-century against Maharashtra. In 2019, it was no looking back for the young lad as he geared up for the most sensational and perseverant form of his life in his domestic career.

Devdutt Padikkal was the highest run-scorer at the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Due to Padikkal’s extraordinary performance, Karnataka managed to win both prestigious trophies. Padikkal also batted extravagantly to take Karnataka into the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy 2019.

The tables were turned and the Indian Cricket was set to welcome its new batting sensation, Devdutt Padikkal. Padikkal got a lottery ticket at the 2020 IPL Auction as he was picked by the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Royal Challengers Bangalore released their regular openers Chris Gayle and KL Rahul in 2018. The impairment of KL Rahul was a big blow for the team. RCB performed miserably in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The franchise was in the hunt for a perfect opener. The in-form Devdutt Padikkal was then found in action at the nets. He was all set to make his debut in 2020.

Devdutt Padikkal made his debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad where he scored a scintillating half-century. He grabbed the attention of the spectators and selectors. In a brilliant IPL season, Padikkal went on to score four more half-centuries. Following his stellar performance, RCB managed to enter the playoffs even after four years.

Devdutt Padikkal won the IPL Emerging Player of the Season Award 2020 for his extraordinary performance at the age of 19. He was the youngest player to feature in the season. He is also part of the current RCB squad and is one of the leading run-scorers at the current season. He scored an outstanding 100 against Rajasthan Royals to set up a grand chase.

The young Indian team toured Sri Lanka for a limited-overs bilateral series. Devdutt Padikkal earned a call from the National Team and he was all set to finally feature in blue. The Indian team consisted of many top-order batsmen and it was difficult for him to find a chance. However, he made it into the team against Sri Lanka in the T-20 series.

Padikkal made his debut in the 2nd T-20 against Sri Lanka. He failed to score runs and impress the support staff. However, he was given another chance to prove himself. Padikkal failed miserably as he was able to gather just 38 runs in the two T-20’s he played. He hit a few boundaries but only averages 19 in T-20 Internationals.
