Harbhajan Singh Biography – Purists might mutter about a lack of kink and flight, but Harbhajan is very much a product of his golden era where short boundaries, heavy bats, and shorter formats offered a little latitude to slow bowlers. Bowling with a windmilling and whiplash action, Bhajji has set a unique benchmark for off-spinners in the subcontinent.

Harbhajan Singh donned the Indian jersey in all three international formats of the game. He played for the Punjab Cricket team in the domestic format and was a predominant part of the Mumbai Indians franchise at the Indian Premier League. Harbhajan Singh made his debut for the Indian team against Australia in a test match on 25th March 1998.

Harbhajan Singh was born into a Sikh family on 3 July 1980 at Jalandhar City in Punjab. He is the only son of Sardar Sardev Singh Plaha who is a businessman running a ball bearing and valve factory. Harbhajan had five sisters which inherited him to him in line for the family business but his father encouraged and insisted he concentrate on cricket.

Harbhajan’s father died in 2000 following which he took over the head of the family and organized marriages for three of his elder sisters. He is fondly known as Bhajji in India and The Turbantor in foreign. Harbhajan was offered the job of Deputy Superintendent of Police by the Governor of Punjab in the year 2002.

Harbhajan was trained as a batsman by his first coach Charanjit but his untimely death led to the reigns of his bowling under Davinder Arora. Harbhajan sweated three hours in the morning and three hours in the evening. 

Harbhajan broke into Punjab’s U-16 Team at the Vijay Merchant Trophy 1995-96 and registered magnificent bowling figures of 7/46 and 5/138.

He was promoted to the U-19 team for the 1996-97 season where he took 15 wickets in the season to pave his way for the senior team selection.

Harbhajan made his first-class debut against Services at the Ranji Trophy season 1997-98. He registered a marvelous figure of 7/123 which led to his selection in the North Zone for the Duleep Trophy. He then represented the Indian U-19 team at the 1998 World Cup. He returned to India and played for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy.

Harbhajan claimed eighteen wickets in three matches for Punjab. He was picked for the North Zone and picked registered a clean figure of 5/131 against Central Zone. He continued to play for the Punjab team in his career and played a total of 198 first-class matches and picked up 780 wickets with an average of 29.04.

Harbhajan made his debut against Australia at the third test in Bangalore. He failed to impress the fraternity as he was overlooked for the following triangular series. He was then picked up for the tri-nation series against Australia and New Zealand where he struggled with his form and had a rough patch in 1997.

Harbhajan was recalled to the team in 1998 for the Zimbabwe tour. He performed brilliantly and had a successful domestic season which led to his inclusion in the New Zealand tour as well.

2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Anil Kumble’s injury had set the stage for Harbhajan to return to the Indian team. Harbhajan had his career-changing performance against Australia as he picked up his maiden five-wicket haul against Australia in a crucial test at Kolkata that included a historic hattrick. Harbhajan ended the series with 32 wickets with a modest average of 89.

2002 Champions Trophy

Harbhajan was selected in the Indian ODI team for the 2002 Champions Trophy. He had a moderate performance as India emerged the joint winners in a rain-washed match. Bhajji had a mixed tournament at the 2003 World Cup. He had rough patch aftermath which continued till his revival till late 2006-07.

2007 T-20 World Cup

After many senior players opted out of the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, Harbhajan Singh along with other youngsters was included in the side under MS Dhoni. Harbhajan played a pivotal role in India’s victorious world cup campaign. He claimed crucial wickets in both the matches against Pakistan including the Final.

2011 World Cup

Harbhajan Singh was inducted into the Indian team for the World Cup. Harbhajan displayed a spectacular performance as he claimed many important wickets and had a healthy economy. After the world cup, Harbhajan’s form deteriorated and he was regularly dropped from the Indian team after 2012.

Harbhajan was picked by the Mumbai Indians franchise in the 2008 IPL Auction. He had a very successful campaign for Mumbai Indians as he won three titles owing to his stellar performance. Harbhajan was released in 2018 and grabbed another title with the Chennai Super Kings franchise. He is currently a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise.
