How Many Numbers on a Roulette Wheel? Roulette Wheel Layout & Numbers

Roulette is so popular that it would not be wrong to say that we would have all seen a roulette wheel during our lifetimes. Some of us must have been aware of a similar concept whether we might have seen it in an actual casino or through the online casino. The traditional roulette wheel (which is the European version) has 37 numbers while the American wheel has 38 numbers.

Once the gaming round starts, the dealer will spin the wheel and drop the ball on the ring outside the wheel. When the speed of the wheel slows down, the balls settle at one of the slots of the number and that will decide the winner depending on who has bet on that number.

Parts of a Roulette Wheel

Here are the parts of a typical roulette wheel:

1) Diamonds are the different obstacles that exist in the roulette wheel which play an important role in diverting the wheel. This ensures that the numbers on which the ball eventually lands up are completely random and unbiased.

2) The ball track is the part of the wheel through which the balls travel to the wheel. In older casinos, you will see the track made of wood epoxy which prevents the wear and tears on the surface of the ball.

3) The rotor is the only moving part of the system and it is what makes the wheel turn. It is designed in such a way that the wheel bias is eliminated and typically the rotor weighs 15 Kg.

4) Pockets are the numbered slots and it is into these the ball will eventually land on. Depending on which pocket the ball has landed, the player who has bet on that number wins.

5) The base is the outer layer of the wheel and protects the main wheel surface as well as the ball track.

The European Roulette

It is the most popular form of the game and it dates back to the 18th century. Wondering how many numbers on a roulette wheel? There are 37 pockets on the wheel reading from 0 to 36. The 0 is marked and green and all other numbers are either in red or black. The defining thing of this version of the game is that there is the number 0. Because of this, the house edge of the game is 2.70% compared to 5.26% of the American version of the game. Each player has the chance of 1 in 37 for their number to be landed on the wheel and this is the same in both online and offline forms of the game.

The American Roulette

The major components of the wheel are all similar to the European Roulette. The difference lies in the marking of the pockets. In the American version of Roulette, there is an additional 00 marked. This affects the chances and probabilities of the other numbers occurring on the wheel. The house edge of this version is higher at 5.26%.

At first, when you glance at the wheel, you will think that the numbers are placed beside each other at random. But that is not the case. The consecutive numbers are marked on the sides opposite each other.

The Wheel Sequence Reasoning

Coming to the sequence of the numbers on the wheel further, there is a reason the designers of the game chose to arrange the numbers in that order, be it on the European version or the American version.

The colors must be alternative, which means that no two consecutive numbers must have the same color adjacent to each other on the wheel.

There must be confusion to the player once they see the wheel. This is done to make the game more challenging.

Similar to the alternating colors, high and low numbers must not also sit adjacent to each other. On the European wheel, the numbers 5 and 10 are exceptions to this.

The odd and even numbers are placed adjacent to each other in such a way that no more than two of them must occur simultaneously.

Blaise Pascal is credited to the first creations of the game which he did accidentally while trying to create a perpetual motion machine. In his version of the wheel, there was only one zero and this provided a large advantage to the house.
