India’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics as Mirabai Chanu wins Silver in 49 kg event

India opens its medal account in Tokyo Olympics 2021 as Mirabai Chanu wins Silver in the women’s weightlifting 49kg category event. Mirabai Chanu started with two good lifts in the snatch round, and a brilliant first lift in the clean and jerk assured her of a silver medal at the Olympics.

China’s Hou Zhihui won the gold medal with her ace performance in the event. Mirabai won the silver medal with a total score of 202 kgs, 8 behind the gold-medalist.

This has happened for the first time that India had won a medal on the opening day of the Olympic Games. This was India’s 1st weightlifting medal at the Olympics in more than 20 years, since Karnam Malleshwari in Sydney.

In the Snatch round, Mirabai’s 1st attempt was a successful lift of 84 kg before she went for 87 kg and completed it easily. However, her third attempt at lifting 89 kg was not a successful one. After the snatch round, Mirabai was in place for a silver medal.

Chinese weightlifter Hou Zhihui set an Olympic record with a lift of 94kg in the snatch event and broke the prior set record of 92 kg. Zhihui’s first clean and jerk was a 109 kg attempt, which she completed with ease, Mirabai followed this lift with a 110 kg lift, assuring her a medal in the event. Hou followed her lift with 114 kg.

Mirabai broke the record by lifting 115 kg in her next attempt. Hou went for a 116 kg lift in her final attempt but Mirabai wasn’t successful at completing the 116 kg lift and therefore finished with a silver medal in her account.

American Jourdan Delacruz, one of the old-time medalists, failed in all attempts after her first 108 kg lift which made the path to winning silver medal for India easier for Mirabai.
