The virtuoso bowling all-rounder, Pathan has galvanized every Indian skipper with his ingenious skills. Irfan Pathan represented the Indian National Cricket team in all three formats of the game. He played for the Baroda Cricket team in domestic format and played for numerous IPL franchises, Gujarat Lions being the last one. Irfan made his debut against Australia in a bilateral Test series on 12th December 2003.

Irfan Khan Pathan was born on 27th October 1984 in Baroda town of Gujarat. He grew up with his elder brother Yusuf Pathan who is also an international cricketer. Yusuf and Irfan belonged to an impoverished family and spent their childhood in a mosque as their father Mehmood Khan Pathan served as a muezzin. 

Pathan’s parents wanted their children to become Islamic scholars but the two had a keen interest in cricket. They started their training off and on-field in mosques and sweated rigorously. Initially, Pathan’s ball didn’t reach the other end but after six hours of toiling efforts, he became the maestro of swing bowling and his ablaze left-arm action helped him progress.

Irfan Pathan developed his blazing cricketing abilities under the notable guidance of former Indian captain Datta Gaekwad. He got selected in Baroda’s U-14 and U-15 teams. He subsequently played for the U-16 team but failed to impress with his performance.

Pathan was then selected in Baroda’s U-19 team and made his debut against Maharashtra. He was captivated by the opportunity but was pushed back to the U-16 team where he performed well.

Youth Career

Irfan Pathan was back in Baroda’s U-19 team where he scored 44 runs and claimed 4 wickets against Saurashtra which compelled the selectors to promote him to the senior team. Following his impressive performance, Pathan was selected in India’s Emerging Players team and the Asian Youth ODI championship against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Pathan performed brilliantly in the series and was named the Man of the tournament at the Youth championship after India defeated Sri Lanka in the final. Pathan returned to the domestic circuit and set a benchmark by his performance for Baroda. This led to his selection in India’s national team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

Pathan played his inaugural Ranji Trophy season for Baroda in 2001. Pathan lifted his domestic career with pace through his marvelous performance in the first couple of matches but his form deteriorated in the further matches though Baroda won the title in 2001. Pathan bowled amazingly at the Irani Trophy match against the Rest of India.

Pathan was then selected in India’s A team and the U-19 Team for the World Cup in 2002. Pathan registered a decisive performance and was included in the West Zone team for Duleep Trophy upon his return. He repaid the selector’s faith after a scintillating performance against Central Zone as he registered figures of 4/74 and 6/72.

Pathan continued to display his fine swing bowling in Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy 2002-03. He was picked for India’s A tour for England and Sri Lanka. He later played the Challengers Trophy and picked up crucial wickets. His consistent performances propelled the national selectors to recognize his talent and provide an opportunity in the national team.

Irfan Pathan made his debut against Australia following Zaheer Khan’s injury at the historic Adelaide Test. Irfan did not make the best of the chance he got and was dropped in the third test. He returned in the fourth test and claimed crucial wickets of Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, and Matthew Hayden to register a figure of 3/80.

Pathan was then picked for the Tri-Nation series against Australia and Zimbabwe. He performed well as he gained an entry in India’s team in limited-overs and Test series against Sri Lanka, England, South Africa, and New Zealand. He also played a determinant role in India’s series against Pakistan and West Indies.

Pathan registered history in 2006 as he picked up a hattrick against Pakistan. His form suffered humiliation in 2006 but was picked in the T-20 World Cup squad as senior players opted out. Pathan’s scintillating bowling in the world cup helped the Indian team to lift the maiden title. He was then a part of the Indian team for a brief period.

Pathan returned to form in 2009 but was dropped from the Indian team for the World Cup 2011. He made a solid comeback in the 2012-13 season which led him to his selection in the 2013 Champions Trophy. In a young and dominant Indian team, Pathan failed to find a spot in the XI but India won the title. Pathan retired from all forms of cricket in 2020.

Irfan Pathan had a roller-coaster journey in IPL as he played for six IPL franchises in nine years. Pathan was initially picked by the Kings XI Punjab franchise where he had a good time. He was released in 2010 following a disappointing IPL performance. He was then picked by the Delhi Daredevils franchise ahead of the 2011 Auction.

Pathan was released by Delhi in 2013 and picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014, Chennai Super Kings in 2015, Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016, and Gujarat Lions in 2017. He remained unpicked in three IPL auctions since 2018 and subsequently announced his retirement in 2020.
