Jhulan Goswami was born on 25th November 1982 at Chakdaha town in Nadia district of West Bengal. Jhulan belonged to a middle-class family where her father Nisith Goswami and mother Jharna Goswami were local workers. Jhulan’s interest in cricket grew when she was watching a 1992 World Cup match on TV.
Jhulan started developing an interest in cricket by actually playing on the field. She was volunteering as a ball-girl in the 1997 Women’s World Cup final match. Jhulan Goswami Early Days
Jhulan Goswami began her cricketing journey in Kolkata. She got admitted to a coaching academy and got scholarships as she belonged to a poor household. Goswami represented her club team in domestic U-14 and U-16 tournaments where she bowled brilliantly.
Jhulan’s height and pace always helped her to succeed in her career. Jhulan picked up crucial wickets for her club team and her aggressive bowling helped her to play for the Bengal U-14 team. She also represented the U-16 team the following year.
Jhulan Goswami Domestic Career
Jhulan Goswami displayed a fantastic performance at the U-14 and U-16 levels which helped her to get into the U-19 team. Jhulan bowled amazingly against Railways and Services where she grabbed the attention of the senior team’s selectors.

She subsequently made her test debut against England in the same series at Lucknow. Jhulan’s T-20 debut also came against England in 2006.

Jhulan began her ODI career on an excellent note against England. She was a consistent part of the team owing to her skillful display of pace and swing. She took over the captaincy from Mithali Raj in 2008 for a brief period of three years. At the 2008 Asia Cup, Jhulan Goswami became the fourth Indian woman to reach 100 wickets in ODI.
Jhulan Goswami is the highest wicket-taker in Women’s ODI. She went past the record of Australian Cathryn Fitzpatrick’s record of 180 wickets at a quadrangular series against South Africa. In 2008, Jhulan Goswami became the first woman to claim 200 wickets in ODI. She achieved the feat in 166 matches with an average of 21.46 and 5 five-wicket hauls.
Goswami has been a consistent part of the Indian women’s ODI team since her debut. She took part in various bilateral series and World cups through her scintillating performance. Goswami led the Indian bowling attack at the ICC World Cup 2017 where India stood the runners-up after losing to England in the final by only nine runs.

Jhulan Goswami made her Test debut against England at Lucknow on 14th January 2002. Goswami was great with the red ball as the experts witnessed a deviating swing by the new ball. Since her development in the test team, Jhulan has been able to retain her spot and has also led the side on a few occasions from 2008-2011.
Jhulan Goswami along with Mithali Raj guided the Indian women’s team towards their first series win against England in 2006-07. In the second test match of the series, Jhulan scored an unbelievable half-century after playing the role of a nightwatchman. She also registered her best bowling figures at the match played in Tauton (5/78 and 5/45).
In 2007, Jhulan Goswami was a part of Asia’s XI test team for the Women’s Afro-Asia tournament. She was named the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year in the same year. Jhulan has been a constant part of the team and also played a valuable role at the 2018 ICC Women’s T-20 World Cup.
In the 68 T-20 International matches played, Jhulan has scored 405 runs with an average of 10.94. She has claimed 56 wickets with a healthy average of 21.94. Jhulan played her last T-20 match against Bangladesh in June 2018.
