The Indian Men’s National Hockey Captain Manpreet Singh was named as the flag bearer for the Indian Contingent at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, 2021. Olympic Medal Winner and Indian Boxer Mary Kom will lead alongside Manpreet Singh at the Opening Ceremony of the much anticipated Summer Olympics, 2020.
The Indian Olympics Association (IAO) has named all the players who will be participating in several events at the Olympics. The grand parade will take place on the opening day of the Olympics, i.e. 23rd July. A 126 athletes from the Indian Contingent will be participating in the opening ceremony parade. The official statement of flag bearers was earlier announced by the IOA.
The joint flag bearer role by a man and a woman for a team is a break with the tradition after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) changed the rules to send a message of gender parity in society.

Mary Kom is a six-time world champion and has won a bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012. She is a scintillating performer for India and has brought laurels to the nation. Manpreet Singh is the captain of the National Men’s Hockey Team. He has led the side at the FIH Pro Hockey League where India finished third.
The Indian Side hasn’t won a hockey medal at the Olympics for the past forty-one years. Captain Manpreet Singh will be hoping to end the medal drought for the hockey-playing nation of India. Manpreet Singh was delighted after the announcement of the flag bearer for India. He stated that it’s an honor to represent India as a captain of the national game and also represent India as a flag bearer in the opening ceremony.
The Indian Men’s National Hockey team has won eight gold medals between 1928 and 1980. It will be interesting to see the Men’s Hockey Team trying to win a gold in Tokyo.
