Her father Dorai Raj is a retired Warrant Officer in the Indian Air Force whereas her mother Leela Raj is a homemaker. Mithali’s family settled in Hyderabad in her childhood days. She attended the Keyes High School for Girls in Hyderabad.

Mithali Raj started her cricket coaching under her first coach Jyoti Prasad who introduced her to Sampath Kumar who shaped her future. Mithali Raj played for the state team at the mere age of nine years. She traveled to Jalandhar to play her first outstation match.

Mithali continued to play for her club team and junior state team across the country. Mithali was majorly supported by her mother who discarded her job to take care of her. Mithali’s brilliant performance in the U-14 level set the stage for her domestic career.

At the tender age of 14, Mithali Raj made her debut for the Air India Team in the women’s domestic circuit. She had a marvelous time with the team. After the Air India team was discarded from the domestic league, Mithali started to play for the Railways Team.

Mithali Raj has consistently performed for the Railways team and led the team to elite leagues. In the Women’s IPL League, Mithali Raj was the captain of the Supernovas team in the 2018 edition. In the 2019 auction, Mithali Raj was picked by the Velocity side and is currently playing for the same team till the current league.

Mithali Raj has a highly prolific international career. She made her debut against Ireland in 1999 where she scored an unbeaten knock of 114 runs. She made her Test debut against South Africa and satisfied the selectors. Mithali Raj scored the highest individual score in women’s test cricket of 209* against England in 2002.

Mithali Raj was ill due to typhoid and missed the initial stage of the 2002 World Cup but returned with a storm to lead India into the final. Mithali Raj was named the Captain of India’s team after the world cup. She led India to her first-ever test series victory against England and also won the Asia Cup through her marvelous performance.

Mithali also captained the Indian side at the 2005 Cricket World Cup where the Indian played the finals against Australia. After the world cup, Mithali announced her retirement from the T-20 International format. In May 2021, Mithali has announced the Captain of India’s test team for the one-off Tests against England and Australia. India secured victory in both matches.

In 220 One-Day Internationals played, Mithali has scored 7,391 runs with a magnificent average of 51.32 including 59 fifties and 7 centuries. In her Test career, Raj played only 12 tests but scored a handsome 699 runs with an average of 43.68. Mithali had a scintillating T-20 career as she played 89 matches and scored 2,364 runs with an average of 37.52.

Mithali Raj was involved in a controversy with the Indian women’s team management at the ICC T-20 World Cup in 2018. Mithali accused coach Ramesh Powar and BCCI member Diana Edulji in a letter to the board of bias and humiliation of not including her in the semifinal against England.

Powar replied to the accusations by claiming that Mithali threatened him to retire from international cricket when asked to bat down the order. Mithali’s low strike rate in T-20 was a major concern for management and the controversy ended with Mithali’s retirement from T-20 in 2019.
