MS Dhoni Biography – Mahendra Singh Dhoni is an Indian Professional Cricket who was the former Captain of the national team across all three formats. Dhoni plays for the Jharkhand Cricket Team in domestic cricket and leads the Chennai Super Kings franchise at the IPL. A middle-order wicket-keeper batsman, Dhoni is hailed as one of the best finishers in the world.

MS Dhoni made his debut on 23rd December 2004 against Bangladesh in a bilateral ODI series. Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on 15th August 2020.

MS Dhoni was born in the Ranchi district of Jharkhand State. His father Pan Singh Dhoni is a retired junior management officer at MECON whereas his mother is a homemaker. Dhoni initially played football for his school team but was later persuaded by his coach to play as a wicket-keeper in the school team. Dhoni also played badminton during his school days.

MS Dhoni started to pursue professional cricket at the young age of 14 years. Dhoni has a sister named Jayanti Gupta and his brother is Narendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni’s mother tongue is Bhojpuri.

MS Dhoni nurtured his cricketing skills at the Commando Cricket Club in Ranchi. He was the regular wicket-keeper for the club team from 1995-98. Following his brilliant performance for the Club team, Dhoni was picked in the Bihar U-16 Team for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. Dhoni had a good run in the domestic league and displayed a phenomenal performance.

In 1998, Dhoni was selected to represent the Central Coal Fields Limited team. Dhoni got an opportunity to play at the top order and he scored marvelous centuries to help the CCL Team qualify to A Division. Dhoni later got selected in Bihar’s U-19 Team for the Cooch Behar Trophy and subsequently played the CK Nayudu Trophy for the East Zone Team.

MS Dhoni made his first-class debut for the Bihar team at the Ranji Trophy 1999-2000 season. Dhoni scored a brilliant half-century against Assam on his debut. He then went on to score his first century against Bengal in the 2001-02 season. Dhoni went on to score five fifties in four matches for Bihar as the team qualified for the quarterfinals.

After the formation of Jharkhand State, Dhoni switched his domestic side in 2003. In the domestic season of 2003-04, Dhoni scored three half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy and a couple of them in the Deodhar Trophy. Dhoni represented the East Zone at the Duleep Trophy and was picked at the finals over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta.

Following his brilliant ODI domestic season of 2003-04, Dhoni was picked in India’s A team for the Kenya and Zimbabwe tour. Dhoni had a good outing with the gloves as he took seven catches and initiated four stumpings. In the tri-nation series against Kenya A and Pakistan A, Dhoni mesmerized the fans by scoring 119 and 120 to help India beat Pakistan to clinch the series.

Dhoni’s clinical performance for India A gained the attention of Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri. He was set to make his debut for the Indian National Cricket Team.

Dhoni’s magnificent performance in India A gained him his inclusion in India’s Squad for the Bangladesh tour of 2004-05. Dhoni had a nightmare at his debut as he was run out for a duck. Dhoni had a disappointing outing at Bangladesh but was provided with another opportunity against Pakistan. Anxious Dhoni finally got his breakthrough at the Pakistan series.

Dhoni scored a brilliant 148 against Pakistan in the second ODI and his performance helped India to win the series. Dhoni was then inducted into the Indian team for the Sri Lankan side. He scored his highest score in ODI of 183 in the second ODI. He holds the record of the highest score by any wicket-keeper batsman in ODI cricket.

Dhoni was named the Captain of India’s contingent at the T-20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007. Under the tremendous leadership of Dhoni, India won the inaugural ICC T-20 World Cup. Dhoni revamped the misery of the 2007 ODI World Cup through his scintillating performance. He continued to lead the Indian T-20 team till 2016.

Dhoni was subsequently named as the Captain of the ODI Team. After the retirement of Anil Kumble, Dhoni was also appointed as the Captain of the Indian Test Team. The Indian Test Team flourished under the leadership of Dhoni as India won the ICC Test Maze for the year 2010. The next crucial moment for Dhoni was the ICC World Cup 2011.

Dhoni was appointed the Captain of the India Team for the World Cup. Dhoni led the Indian team to lift the World Cup after 28 years. Dhoni’s 91 in the final against Sri Lanka adjudged him as the Man of the Match. Dhoni also led the Indian Team to their first-ever Champions Trophy victory in 2013 at the England and Wales.

Dhoni was signed as the skipper of the Chennai Super Kings franchise at the inaugural season of IPL in 2008. CSK has retained Dhoni till the currents season of IPL. At the recently conducted Vivo IPL 2021, CSK emerged victorious under the able leadership of Dhoni. Apart from 2021, CSK won 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2018 editions under the captaincy of Dhoni.
