Wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya lost his final round of men’s freestyle 57kg to defending world champion Zavur Uguev of Russia. Ravi bags a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, 5th overall medal for India.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya became the second Indian, after Mirabai Chanu to secure a silver medal for India.
Ravi Kumar was 2 points behind the world champion in the starting but bounced back to level the score. Uguev scored 2 more points and took a 4-2 lead over the Indian. Uguev then took a 5-point edge over Ravi (7-2). The Indian fought back for 2 more points but couldn’t overturn the 3-point lead of the Russian champion Uguev.
The Indian wrestler defeated Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev, former world champion and silver medalist, in the semi-finals. He had come back from the 2-9 down to achieve victory by fall. Ravi defeated Bulgaria’s Georgi Vangelov in the quarter finals (14-4) and Colombia’s Oscar Tigereros in the round of 16 (13-2) by technical superiority.

The 23-year-old wrestler who was making his Olympic debut at Tokyo has now joined the legendary Sushil Kumar to become only the second Indian wrestler to win a silver medal at the Olympic games.
The legendary wrestler KD Jadhav won a bronze medal at the 1952 Olympic Games before Sushil Kumar won a bronze and a silver medal at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics respectively. Yogeshwar Dutt won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics after which the bronze medalist Sakshi Malik became the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at Rio Olympics 2016.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya became the 5th Indian wrestler to secure a medal for India at the Olympic games. Social Media is flooded with congratulatory messages and wishes for the young Indian wrestler.
