Ashwin’s father Ravichandran is an engineer and he too played cricket at club level as a fast bowler. Ashwin was a protagonist and excelled in academics as he got admitted at a prestigious institution- SSN College of Engineering to pursue a B. Tech course.

R Ashwin began his cricketing career as an Opening batsman for his school and college team. His coaches C.K Vijay and Chandra changed his bowling action from medium-pace to spin. He has then dropped down the batting order and played at the lower middle order. He concentrated on his bowling as his spin led to the born of a new mystery spinner.

R Ashwin’s early days in cricket are fondly remembered through his extraordinary performance. As an opening batsman, he scored valuable runs at the top, and then turned into a spinner, he just destroyed the greatest batting lineups in domestic cricket. Finally marked the debut of the off-break spinner against Haryana in the 2006-07 season. Ashwin displayed a potential show at his debut.

He went on to claim more wickets and scored valuable runs for the team. His exquisite performance for Tamil Nadu Team helped him to earn a place in the South Zone team. In a magnificent domestic season, Ashwin managed to pick up 134 wickets in only 27 first-class matches. His performance grabbed the attention of national selectors.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s scintillating domestic season helped him to boost his career at a grand stage. He was picked by the Chennai Super Kings franchise at the 2008 IPL Auction. He failed to make his debut in his maiden season but sparked at the next in the next season to mark his debut under Captain MS Dhoni. His debut came against Deccan Chargers.

After an impressive performance in 2009, Ashwin booked a regular place in 2010 and 2011 where the franchise won the coveted IPL trophy. Ashwin was one of the prominent reasons for Chennai’s success as the off-spinner claimed 13 wickets in the 2010 season whereas a magical stint of 20 wickets in the 2011 season.

Ashwin continued to be a part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise till its ban in 2016. He was later picked by the Rising Pune Supergiants franchise ahead of the 2016 season of IPL. Ashwin lost his glittery touch with the white ball as he was released by the franchise ahead of the 2017 auction. He was then picked by the Kings XI Punjab franchise as a Captain.

Ashwin achieved no glory in leadership as the Punjab franchise failed miserably in the 2018 season. He continued to disappoint the owners who released him ahead of the 2020 auction and named KL Rahul as the Captain. Ashwin was picked by the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2020 and he contributed his stellar performance as the franchise stood Runners Up at 2020 season.

R Ashwin’s international career is the most interesting phase of his life. His brilliant performance at 2010 IPL helped him to get selected in India’s second-string team for the Zimbabwe tour. Ashwin made his T-20 and ODI debut against the same opponent. His appealing performance impressed every Indian fan and professional.

Ashwin was then picked for the New Zealand and England series where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker. He was then a part of the prestigious Indian team for the ICC World Cup 2011. Ashwin took part in quite a few matches as the Indian team emerged as the champions. He played a crucial role in the quarterfinals against Australia.

Ashwin continued to garner the attention of national selectors who acknowledged his performance and selected him for the Test series against West Indies. At his debut match, he picked up 3 wickets in the first innings and 6 wickets in the second innings to help India win the match. In the third match at Mumbai, he scored his maiden international century.

Ashwin continued to be a regular part of the test team. He played a crucial part in the England series in 2021 and the Australian series before that. Ashwin was also a part of the victorious Indian team for the Champions Trophy 2013. He bowled the last over in the Final against England and defended 12 runs in a rain-washed game.
