Shikhar Dhawan Biography – The Gabbar of Indian Cricket, Shikhar Dhawan has bordered his showmanship with his flamboyant batting skills. Shikhar Dhawan was born on 5th December 1985 in New Delhi in India. Dhawan is born into a Punjabi family to Mahendra Pal Dhawan and Sunaina Dhawan. The roots of Dhawan’s family are traced back to Ludhiana in Punjab. Shikhar has a younger sister named Shresta Dhawan and an elder cousin who too played cricket.

Watching his cousin play at the Sonnet Cricket Club, Dhawan agreeably joined the academy. His dedication to the sport led to his coach signing him at the age of 12. Initially, Dhawan marked the beginning of his career by being a wicket-keeper batsman for his club but later he turned into a specialist opening batsman.

Dhawan was trained under the most professional coach in Delhi who has guided 12 international Indian cricketers. He played for the club in U-16 tournaments and got selected for Delhi’s U-16 team for the Vijay Merchant Trophy 1999-00. Dhawan was Delhi’s leading run-scorer in the 2000-01 season where he scored 755 runs in 9 matches.

Dhawan continued to perform for Delhi as he was picked in U-19 Team for the Cooch Behar Trophy. He scored 388 runs in 4 matches after which he was selected in the North Zone team for the Vinoo Mankad and CK Nayudu Trophy. His impressive performance in zonal matches led to his selection in India’s U-19 team for the 2004 World Cup in Bangladesh.

Dhawan scored 505 runs at the World Cup that remains the highest aggregate by an individual batsman. He was thereupon selected for Youth tests in England where he scored 69 and 41 runs.

Dhawan made his first-class debut for Delhi at the 2004-05 season of Ranji Trophy against Andhra Pradesh. He finished as the leading run-scorer for Delhi with 461 runs in 6 matches. His List A debut came against Jammu and Kashmir at the 2004-05 Vijay Hazare Trophy where he scored back to back hundreds to get into the India Seniors squad for NKV Salve Challengers Trophy.

Dhawan opened the innings against the future Indian captain MS Dhoni and registered a clinical partnership of 246 runs. He subsequently played for India A team against Pakistan. Dhawan had a poor run in the 2005-06 Ranji Trophy and Challengers Trophy but had his dominance prevailing in the 50-over Hazare Trophy.

Dhawan continued to impress the Delhi selectors as he hit magnificent centuries at Ranji and Deodhar Trophy. Dhawan also played for India Blue and Red at the Duleep Trophy. Dhawan represented the India Blue team at the Challengers Trophy 2010 where his fabulous knock caught the eyes of the selectors to pave the way for his international debut.

Dhawan made his international debut against Australia at an ODI match in 2010. Dhawan was out for a duck as he failed to feature in the rest of the series. In the following series against West Indies, Dhawan made his T-20 debut but did not captivate on the opportunity. He scored fifty in the second ODI but attached a string of low scores aftermath.

Sent back to the Delhi team, Dhawan had a marvelous 2012-13 domestic season following which he earned a Test call against Australia. Virender Sehwag’s poor form helped Dhawan to make his debut in the third test. Dhawan made the best of the opportunity as he scored a knock of 185 runs to reserve his spot in the Indian team.

Dhawan was unfortunately injured and ruled out of the remaining part of the series. After a strong comeback in the IPL, Dhawan earned a place in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2013.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013

The ICC Champions Trophy was the most successful venture for Dhawan. Opening the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, Dhawan scored 114, 102, and 48 runs on the group stage. At the semifinals against Sri Lanka, Dhawan scored 68 runs to set a compelling chase. In a 20-over final match, Dhawan sparked the power play by scoring 31 runs off 24 balls. Dhawan’s scintillating effort help India to win the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni.

Dhawan continued to display his versatile performance for India. He was India’s leading run-scorer at the 2015 World Cup and an integral part of the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup. In the test format too, Dhawan has been a consistent part of the team and has scored brilliant centuries for the team including his top score of 190.

Dhawan has also featured in the Indian T-20 team where he has played 66 T-20 Internationals and has been a part of the 2014 and 2016 World Cup. He has scored 1719 with an average of 28.18.

Shikhar Dhawan got engaged to an Australian-based kickboxer Ayesha Mukherjee in 2009 and the duo got married in 2012. Mukherjee was introduced to Dhawan by Harbhajan and she is 12 years old than Dhawan. Ayesha gave birth to Dhawan’s first son Zoravar in 2015. Ayesha was a mother to two daughters from her previous marriage and Dhawan legally adopted both of them, Aliyah and Rhea.

Divorce

Following internal disputes and repercussions, Dhawan and Ayesha Mukherjee mutually parted their ways in September 2021. The couple has filed for a legal divorce that will be the second one for Ayesha.
