Sunil Gavaskar Biography – One of the finest Indian opening batsmen, Sunil Gavaskar scripted his name in the history of cricket through his enormous batting technique. With a virtually flair defense and accelerating drive, Gavaskar was a glimmer to the eyes. With his adequate professionalism, Gavaskar earned a remarkable name in Indian Cricket.

Sunil Gavaskar, popularly known as Sunny Da represented the Indian national team in Test and ODI format. He is currently a commentator with the BCCI. Gavaskar made his debut for the Indian Test team on 6th March 1971 against West Indies and his ODI debut against England on 13th July 1974. In the domestic circuit, Gavaskar played for the Bombay Cricket Team.

Sunil Gavaskar was born on 10th July 1949 in Bombay Province (currently Mumbai, Maharashtra). Sunil was born to Meenal and Manohar Gavaskar who are based in Mumbai. Sunil was unfortunately exchanged with a fisherman’s son but his uncle recognized him to a birthmark. Sunil started his cricketing journey at the age of 14.

Sunil’s uncle Madhav Mantri is a retired Indian cricketer whereas his sister is married to former Indian cricketer Gundappa Vishwanath. His other sister is the general secretary of the Women’s Cricket Association of India. Sunny Paaji is a sincere devotee of late spiritual guru Bhagwan Shri Satya Sai Baba of Maharashtra.

Sunil Gavaskar acquired his professional batting coaching from his coach Vasu Paranjape. He represented his school team in domestic tournaments and was named the Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 1996. He scored consistent knocks of 246, 222, and 85 in his final schooling year against the touring London schoolboys.

Gavaskar continued to play cricket for his college team which is a prestigious institution in India- St. Xavier’s College. After his brilliant run in domestic format, he was picked for his debut for Sultan Colts XI against Dungarpur XI. He smashed fine centuries to get noticed by the Bombay selection committee and was set to make his debut.

Gavaskar was picked in Bombay’s squad for the Ranji Trophy season 1966-67. However, he failed to make his debut and remained on the bench for two years. Finally, he made his debut against Karnataka in the 1968-69 season. Gavaskar was dismissed for a duck and faced severe backlash and derogatory claims of his selection due to his Indian cricketer uncle.

Following a heavy backlash, Gavaskar replied to the commenters with a brilliant display of batting. He scored a century in the next match against Rajasthan and continued to perform well. His breakthrough came following his consecutive centuries in the following matches against Gujarat and Haryana that paved the way for his national selection.

Owing to his magnificent run at the Ranji Trophy, Gavaskar was picked in India’s squad for the West Indies tour. However, he missed the first test due to a tooth infection but made his debut in the second test and scored a brilliant knock of 65 runs which helped India to record their first victory on the West Indies soil.

Gavaskar continued with his marvelous run as he scored centuries in every test against West Indies which resulted in India’s first-ever series victory against West Indies. He was then provided with a golden opportunity at the England tour. However, he failed to make an impression scoring only 144 runs in the series.

Gavaskar was then picked for the home series against England. Gavaskar found it difficult to score on dusty wickets in India. His first home series was an utter embarrassment as he scored just 224 runs with an average of 24. However, his failure at the home tour was placated by a century at the Old Trafford in the following series.

Gavaskar continued to prove his dominance in the Test format. He scored brilliantly on the tour to West Indies and Australia. He scored his maiden home century against England at the 1975 series and went on to score another century against New Zealand. In a successful Pakistan tour, Gavaskar scored 447 runs with an average of 89.50.

Sunil Gavaskar made his debut in the ODI format against England in 1974. However, his strike rate was a major concern for the national team. In a 1975 World Cup match against England, he scored just 36 runs off 174 balls with just a single boundary due to which he faced severe criticism. Gavaskar continued to play in the ODI team for a while.

Gavaskar was inducted into the 1979 World Cup Indian team. Gavaskar performed brilliantly as India reached the semifinals. Gavaskar was also a part of the victorious Indian Team at the 1983 World Cup. He has remained in controversy for his captaincy period.

In the 108 ODI’s played for India, Sunil Gavaskar has scored 3092 runs with an average of 35.10. However, his strike rate has always been a matter of concern for the national team that remained as low as 62.3 in his career.

Sunil Gavaskar married Marshneil Gavaskar at a private ceremony in Mumbai in 1974. The couple shares a healthy bond even after 47 years of their marriage. Marshneil gave birth to Rohan Gavaskar in 1976. Rohan Gavaskar also represented the Indian national cricket team but his career was short-lived as he played only 11 ODI’s.

Sunil Gavaskar has sparked many controversies in his professional life. Some of them include:

  • In an Indian-Australia Test match in Sydney  2008, Gavaskar had criticized the match referee Proctor’s decision against Harbhajan Singh and made a racist comment that a white man try to gain superiority over a brown man.
  • During IPL 2020, Gavaskar had made a controversial and derogatory remark against Captain Virat Kohli’s poor form. He commented during an RCB match that the reason for Virat’s poor form is because he practiced to his wife Anushka Sharma’s bowling in lockdown.
  • Gavaskar was stripped off to Captaincy in 1970-71 due to his defection against World Series and defamatory statements.
