Suresh Raina Biography – An aggressive Left-Handed Batsman, renowned for his massive hits with impunity and electrifying efforts at the field, Suresh Raina was the most extravagant batting all-rounder in the Indian National Cricket Team. A close aide of former skipper MS Dhoni, the two exhibit a great sense of understanding in and off the field.

Suresh Raina represents the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Team in domestic cricket and the Chennai Super Kings franchise at the IPL. Raina made his debut for the national team in the 50-over format of the game against Sri Lanka on 30th July 2005.

Suresh Raina was born on 27th November 1986 at Muradnagar town of Ghaziabad district in Uttar Pradesh. Raina belonged to a Kashmiri Pundit family and his father Trilokchand Raina was military personnel. Being raised in a military background, Raina maintained a disciplined life. He started to pursue professional cricket at the young age of 14.

Raina excelled in his sport right through his admission to specialist Government Sports College. His fellow men were jealous of him which in turn led to a struggle in his youth days where he had to sleep on floors.

Raina performed brilliantly for the Lucknow Sports College team which led to his selection as the captain of the Uttar Pradesh U-16 Team. His impressive performance at the Vijay Merchant Trophy led to his selection in the Indian U-19 Team at the youngest age of 15. He toured to England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan where he scored numerous half-centuries to his name.

Raina scored a marvelous score of 90 runs of 38 balls against Pakistan at the Asian ODI Championship which led to his selection in the U-19 World Cup Squad. His significant performance at World Cup gained him a Border-Gavaskar Cricket scholarship at Australian Cricket Academy where he made his first-class debut and scored 645 runs in the season with an average of 53.75.

Raina made his Ranji Trophy debut for Uttar Pradesh against Assam in February 2003 at the tender age of 17. However, he failed to feature in the XI at the 2003-04 season. Raina subsequently entered the Uttar Pradesh Ranji Team in the following season and marked his valuable position with magnificent all-around performance.

Raina’s impressive performance at Ranji Trophy ensured his List A debut for Uttar Pradesh at the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he scored a couple of fifties to take his team in the next round. Raina was also featured in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and scored a couple of cameos which paved the way for his Indian team call.

Following his versatile domestic season, Raina got a call in the Indian team for the Sri Lankan series. The Left-Handed batsman made his debut in the first ODI itself. Raina had a nightmare at his debut as he was dismissed for a duck off the greatest bowler in the world Muttiah Muralitharan. His embarrassing Sri Lankan tour led to his departure from the national team.

After being out for almost three years from international cricket, Raina was called back for the South African series in 2010 but failed to make it in the XI. He then featured against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and was chosen as the youngest captain of India after all the first-choice players were rested in the tri-nation series.

Suresh Raina led the Indian side for the T-20 series against Zimbabwe and current Indian skipper Virat Kohli made his debut under Raina’s captaincy. Raina was the leading run-scorer in the series and he continued with his consistent run in the upcoming series that eventually led to his selection in the 2011 World Cup squad under MS Dhoni.

Raina made it into the XI quite often even in the presence of Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh. He played a crucial part in India’s victory. Raina’s dominating performance at IPL 2014 led to his selection in the 2015 World Cup and 2016 T-20 World Cup Squad which was the last major championship he featured in for India.

Raina’s irregularity in National Team led to the termination of his contract with BCCI in 2017. He later announced his retirement from international cricket along with his counterpart MS Dhoni on 15th August 2020.

Suresh Raina had a short-lived test career. He was called for the white-jersey cricket in the Sri Lankan tour of 2010. His debut came in the Second Test of the series after regular all-rounder Yuvraj Singh got ill. Raina brought up his maiden Test century at his debut alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Raina was then picked for the Australia and South Africa series where he failed to make an impact that led to his dropping and favoring of a rookie fellowman Cheteshwar Pujara.

Suresh Raina was picked by the Chennai Super Kings franchise at the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008. Raina played an important role in Chennai’s victory in 2010 and 2011. He was the Man of the Match in the 2010 IPL final. Following the CSK ban in 2016, Raina was picked by Gujarat Lions and named as the Captain of the franchise.

Raina continues to be an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise under skipper MS Dhoni which won the recently concluded Vivo IPL 2021.
