After the World Test Championship that concluded on Wednesday, June 23rd, another ICC event is scheduled to take place in the October-November window. The men’s T20 World Cup 2021 that was planned to be organized in India is now shifted to UAE, according to the latest sources.
The BCCI is also planning to conduct the remainder of the postponed IPL in September-October window. The world-renowned league was postponed due to the spike in COVID-19 cases in India and bio-bubble breach within the IPL teams. According to the reports, the IPL 2021 will resume from September 19th and the final will take place on October 15th.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin 2 days after the IPL 2021 final. The upcoming World Cup will be a 16-team tournament. The World Cup was slated to be played in India, but due to the COVID-19 cases and an expected third wave, there have been talks of shifting the tournament to UAE.
BCCI has planned to conduct the men’s World Cup in UAE just like they conducted the 2020 IPL, which was a successful event.
Round 1 of the men’s T20 World Cup includes 12 matches and will comprise of 8 teams, out of which 4 (the top 2 teams from each group), will qualify for the Super 12s.
4 teams from the lot of 8 – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Oman, Namibia, Papua New Guinea – will then move to the Super 12s, joining the top 8 ranked T20I teams, the sources stated.
