The popularity of T20 cricket has led to the emergence of various leagues that host local and international players in action-packed and adrenaline-filled tournaments. The most popular of them being, of course, the IPL. While some may argue that T20 is all about hitting the balls to glory, in reality, it is also about sharp bowling. Disclaimer – These records are as of November 2021. The records may change and vary with time.

Best Bowling Figures in T20 International

Although compared to T20 matches, and the longer matches, the number of International T20s played is the least. However, the bowling figures by Deepak Chahar against Bangladesh in Nagpur, back in 2019 are hard to beat. The figures read like this, brace yourself.

Yes, you read it right, it is 6 wickets! And that too in just 20 balls. This was also the first-ever hat-trick for India in Twenty20 Internationals. This also helped India secure a 30 run victory and lead the series by 2-1.

India had batted first during the match and they made a 175. Bangladesh, while chasing it were bowled out for 144, with 4 balls to spare. But Deepak Chahar was still the third player in the history to get a six-four in the international version of T20s. The previous record was held by Ajantha Mendis who took 6 wickets while conceding 8 runs. This match was way back in 2012, against Zimbabwe. At the time of the record, the bowling figures by Deepak Chahar were also the fourth-best among all T20s, including the domestic competitions and leagues.

That iconic match was Chahar’s sixth T20I and he had debuted a year earlier. At the time of the match, he had just played one 50-over game for India. The onslaught from Deepak Chahar began from the first over itself when he scalped the wickets of Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar in succession, also courtesy of some good catching by the Indian team.

Chahar then took his third wicket in the 13th over, and thanks to his slow ball variation, had Mohammad Mithun taken at long-off. Then again, they returned in the 18th over and took the wicket of Shafiul Islam with a slow ball bouncer.

Again, Deepak Chahar came back at the last over when Bangladesh needed 31 runs to win. He took the two wickets in two balls, and that completed his hattrick, as well as created the best figures of all-time in T20I for a bowler. Post the match, an emotional Chahar said that he had never imagined such an amazing feat would happen and that he had been working hard from his childhood and it was finally paying off.

Best T20 Bowling Figures – Domestic and International

It is surprising that the best figure in T20 so far is held by a bowler who does it part-time. The person in focus is Colin Ackermann and he had taken 7 wickets for 18 runs in an English T20 county game. At the time of the record, Colin was 28 years old, and he was playing for Leicestershire. His side eventually claimed victory over Warwickshire by 55 runs.

Before this, Arul Suppaiah held the record where he had claimed 6-5 against Glamorgan while playing for Somerset in 2011. After the match, Colin Ackermann said that it had not sunk him in yet, and he would remember this game for a long time. He said that it was probably the first time in his career that Grace Road had turned so much, and he also used his height to get a little bounce from the wicket. He also added that he wanted the batters to hit to the larger side of the field, and for them to tempt him, he had mixed up the pace.

As mentioned above, Colin Ackermann is a batting all-rounder, and bowling is not even his main strength!

Best T20 Bowling Figures in a T20 World Cup

At the time of writing this article, the T20 World Cup is underway in the UAE, after it had to be postponed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in 2012, Ajantha Mendis created history by having the best bowling figures across all T20 World Cups to date.

This match was against Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka eventually won the match by 82 runs. Ajantha Mendis finished with figures of 4-2-8-6. Sri Lanka who had batted first had put up a mighty total of 182 which was always going to be an uphill task for Zimbabwe. However, they began their chase well with the opening batsmen managing to put 37 runs for the first wicket, briskly. When the pacers were unable to find any wickets, the captain turned to Ajantha Mendis, who eventually sealed the night for them. Overall, Mendis had an amazing tournament as well, where he took 15 wickets and Sri Lanka reached the final only to lose to West Indies.

Conclusion – Best Bowling Figures in T20

Bowling in T20s is a challenge compared to the longer formats because the batters look to explode from ball 1. But a lot of factors come into play even while bowling – variations, dew factor, field setting, etc. Over time, bowlers have tuned their game to the brisk pace of T20s, and they have become smarter to stop the flow of runs and take wickets. With time, tournaments around the world have also been making pitches neutral and supportive for the bowler so there is a well-balanced game. It is no doubt that T20 is one of the fastest-growing versions of the sport worldwide, so expect these records to be broken in the coming times.
