Tokyo Olympics 2020 Day 3: Lovlina wins round of 16 Match, one win away from the Medal

Disappointing Day for India at Tokyo Olympics 2020. The day began on a positive note as Indian shooters, Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary topped their qualification round in the mixed team air pistol event, but they finished 7th in stage 2 and therefore missing the medal events.

The day got worse for the Indian Shooters as Divyansh/Elevenil and Anjum/Deepak also failed to qualify for the rifle final rounds.

Good news came from the hockey arena as the Indian men’s hockey team beat Spain 3-0. The hockey team will be playing against Argentina on Thursday.

Women boxer, Lovlina Borgohain became the 1st Indian boxer to qualify for the quarterfinals with a win over German welterweight Nadine Apetz. Lovlina is just one win away from securing herself a medal, she needs to win her next match against Chin-Chen Nien of Chinese Taipei on 30th July, Friday to secure a bronze medal.

We got disappointing news from the badminton court as well, because even after winning the event on Tuesday, Shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty finished 3rd in group A and failed to make it to quarters.

Sharath Kamal also ended his table tennis campaign at Tokyo 2020. Sailor Vishnu Saravanan improved his overnight rank from 25th to 22nd spot.

Indian silver medallist Mirabai Chanu returned to India and was warmly welcomed at the Delhi airport and her hometown Imphal. Chanu also met with ex-sports minister Kiren Rijiju and Anurag Thakur.

The gold medalist in the 49kg category weightlifting, Hou Zhizhi will be tested by the anti-doping authorities. If she fails the test, then the next clean athlete will be awarded the rightful Olympic medal with the disqualification of the doped athlete, in this case, India’s Mirabai Chanu. This process is called Olympic Medal Reallocation. The tests results are yet to be back.
