Tokyo Olympics 2020: Manika Batra wins in Round 1

The Indian Contingent at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 is off to a great start in the events of Shooting, Archery, and Hockey. The athletes qualified for the next round by setting great Indian Records. In the events of Table Tennis, Indian athletes displayed a poor performance as they were ousted in two important events.

Manika Batra kept the Indian Table Tennis contingent’s hope alive as she successfully won in the First Round to qualify for the next round. Batra defeated British Top Seed Tin-Tin-Ho by 4-0. Batra dominated Tin Ho from the very start and won four straight games by 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, and 11-9. Manika Batra has a healthy chance of winning a medal at the Women’s singles event as she faces M. Pesotska from Ukraine.

Meanwhile, another Women’s Single athlete from India will participate in the Women’s Singles event. Sutirtha Mukherjee will face Linda Bergstrom of Sweden in her First Round Match today. Sutirtha and Manika will likely face each other if they win their second-round match.

The mixed-doubles event at the Table Tennis was considered as India’s healthy chance for winning a Tokyo medal until the pair of Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal were outplayed in the Round of 16 Match. The 12th seed pair of Batra and Kamal had a great start in the first round and had a great chance to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal lost to World No. 1 Pair of Lin Yun Ju and Cheng I Ching from Chinese Taipei on the early morning of Saturday. The Indian hopes from the mixed doubles pair were shattered after a disappointing result of 4-0 sets. Chinese Taipei won the games by 8-11, 6-11, 5-11, and 4-11 to eliminate India.
