There are currently four guaranteed slots in the group stage in England, Spain, Italy and Germany. But the top teams that couldn’t make it into the top four in their respective leagues could still qualify, with three additional slots in the group stage being drawn for such teams based on their historical records in Europe.
The fourth additional place could go to France, which currently has only two guaranteed slots in the group stage, while the third team has to go through the qualifying round.
It also comes up with a guaranteed advantage in increase of TV revenue and prize money for both UEFA and clubs, as it sells 180 group-stage games to companies that broadcast instead of 96.
