Umran Malik BiographyUmran Malik is an Indian professional cricketer who plays for the Jammu and Kashmir team in domestic cricket and the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise at the Indian Premier League. Umran Malik is a Right-Arm Fast Bowler who is currently acknowledged as one of the fastest pacers in India after a clinical performance in the 2021 edition of IPL.

Following his impressive performance at the IPL, Umran Malik was recently chosen as a Net Bowler for Team India’s preparations for the ICC T-20 World Cup in the United Arabs Emirates.

Umran Malik was born on 22nd November 1999 at Gujjar Nagar in Jammu and Kashmir State. His father Abdul Rashid is a fruit vendor while his mother is a homemaker. Hailing from a family which suffered through the adverse financial crisis, Malik failed to pursue professional cricket at a young age and started to attain coaching at an age of 17.

Umran Malik was spotted as a young talent by his coach Randhir Manas. Manas was anguished at Malik for his casual approach towards the game despite his great bowling pace and skills. Manas trained Malik to get disciplined and pursue cricket professionally.

Umran Malik’s coach Randhir Manas brought innovation in his cricketing career. He trained the young pace gun with exquisite bowling skills which enhanced his line and length along with the fierce pace. Malik’s stellar performance at the Inter-Club and Zonal matches helped him to grab a spot in Jammu & Kashmir’s U-19 Team.

Malik failed to find a spot in Jammu and Kashmir’s U-19 team and the decision of the team’s support staff was criticized by his coach and former Assam wicket-keeper Ajay Ratra. Malik was seen bowling magnificently at the Nets which helped him to grab a spot in Jammu and Kashmir’s senior cricket team.

Umran Malik got into the Jammu and Kashmir’s senior team squad in 2019. He was mentored under the statutory guidance of an imperial mentor and former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan. Pathan and Jammu & Kashmir’s coach Milap Mewada were overwhelmed by Malik’s performance in the Nets. They decided to nurture the talent for his representation in the national team.

Umran’s training camp for the State team got hampered due to the curfew imposed amidst the abrogation of Article 370. Retired IPS officer CEO of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association urged his police force to bring the players safely to the camp. Malik caught the eyes of the selectors after his powerful bowling at the camp.

Umran Malik made his T-20 debut at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Railways on 18th January 2021. Captain Parvez Rasool won the toss and elected to field first. At his second spell in the 14th over, Malik claimed his maiden wicket as he dismissed Karn Sharma. He went on to pick another two wickets as he ended with a brilliant bowling figure of 3/24.

Umran Malik made his List-A debut against the Bengal Team at the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019. Malik had a major setback as he had a disappointing performance in the tournament. He subsequently returned to the T-20 side and improved his bowling skills to get noticed by the IPL talent recruiting agencies ahead of the 2021 IPL Auction.

Umran Malik was selected as a stand-by bowler for the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise at the Vivo IPL 2021. In a life-turning moment for him, Malik replaced injured T Natarajan at the second leg of Vivo IPL 2021 in the United Arabs Emirates. Umran was called and he bowled magnificently at the nets before getting an opportunity in the Playing XI.

Malik caught the eyes of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise after he was spotted beating David Warner in the nets. Captain Kane Williamson considered his inclusion in the XI after the regular pacer Sandeep Sharma sustained an injury. Malik finally paved the way for his debut at the prestigious IPL.

Umran Malik made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders in Dubai. Malik came into a bowl in the fourth over and conceded nine runs and eventually completed his quota of four overs for 27 runs. Though he wasn’t successful in picking up wickets, he earned appreciation from many cricketing analysts for his brilliant pace and temperament.

Umran Malik recorded the fastest ball by an Indian seamer at the IPL which crossed the 150 km/hr mark. He bowed the fastest over at the IPL against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore. His average pace of the over was over 145 km/hr. His consistency finally rewarded him as he was picked up as Net Bowler for India’s T-20 World Cup campaign.
