Sehwag was just seven years old when he received his first cricketing gift- a toy bat. Sehwag started to gain professional coaching under his coach Amar Nath Sharma who trained him to be an elegant batsman. As a young prodigy, Sehwag was an attacking batsman from the initial phase of his career. He started to play for his school team at the U-14 level.

After completing his secondary education, Sehwag joined Jamia Millia University in Delhi. He represented his university at the U-19 level and his fierce performance helped him to grab a spot in the senior team where he played exquisitely at the Inter-University matches.

Sehwag made his first-class debut for the Delhi Cricket team in the Ranji Trophy season 1997-98. He was selected to represent the North Zone for Duleep Trophy and in the following season, he scored a knock of 274 runs against South Zone and 187 in a Ranji match against Punjab.

Sehwag’s impressive performance led to his selection in the U-19 team that toured South Africa in 2000. Sehwag’s consistency in the game attracted the national selectors after which he became a regular player in the national team. He continued to play for Delhi and captained Delhi in 2005-06.

Sehwag’s aggressive batting nature helped him to make his debut in the 50-over format against Pakistan in 1999. He scored a solitary run and turned out to be inexpensive in bowling following which he was dropped from the national team for twenty months. Sehwag was then picked for the Australian series which changed his life.

In the fourth ODI against Australia, Sehwag rose to prominence as he scored 58 runs and picked three wickets to be adjudged as the Man of the Match. Sehwag then returned in the New Zealand series and batted at the opening slot to score a hundred of just sixty-nine balls. After this magnificent knock, he was a regular opener in the Indian side.

Sehwag made his Test debut against South Africa in 2001 at Bloemfontein. He scored a century on his debut in a losing cause. Sehwag then returned with his extravagant form in the England and Zimbabwe series. His breakthrough came against England where he has promoted up the order and scored 84 at Lord’s and a century at Trent Bridge.

Sehwag continued to perform brilliantly in the white jersey. He had a successful tour with the West Indies and Sri Lanka where he scored his career-best score of 319. He was out of the team due to poor form in 2006-07 but back with a blast against Australia and England. In a short-lived T-20 international career, Sehwag played 19 matches and scored 291 runs.

2011 World Cup

India won the 2011 World Cup under MS Dhoni. Sehwag was a crucial part of the team who opened the innings alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Sehwag played a thrilling knock of 175 against Bangladesh in the first match and went on to score consistently in the tournament as India lifted the title after 28 years of glory.

Sehwag was picked by the Delhi Daredevils franchise in the inaugural IPL auctions. He opened the batting alongside his Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir. The duo led Delhi to the semifinals in 2009. Sehwag led the franchise in the 2011 edition. In a total of 96 IPL matches, Sehwag scored 2629 runs with an average of near 30.

This provoked a spat between ICC and BCCI where Sehwag played the third test and ICC clarified that any match in which Sehwag plays will be considered unofficial before he serves his ban.
  2. Indian Captain MS Dhoni and Sehwag had a cold war before the 2011 World Cup. Dhoni had questioned about Sehwag’s fitness which the opener did not find compelling and started to maintain distance.
  3. Sehwag lashed out at Sri Lankan bowler Randiv at a match in 2009. He was batting on 99 when India needed one run for victory and Randiv bowled a no-ball and Sehwag was denied a century.
