Box cricket league is actually a sports reality show where players are TV actors who voluntarily participate in the game of Cricket. There is a much indoor format, and all this is possible because of the cricket bowling machine on the set. Here, people can watch their favorites competing against each other for their team’s victory. If you think it is anything new, the concepts of the game, then I’m afraid you might be mistaken in this. The reality series for Box Cricket league, also popularly called BCL, was inspired was another form of T10 tournament under the name of Celebrity Cricket League. The Celebrity Cricket League was played with the franchise in every major Indian City. As the name suggests again, Celebrity Cricket League was a unique collaboration between the three commodities, Cricket-the sport, entertainment-the idea, and Celebrity-the charm of unprofessional players but known faces from different industries. The Celebrity Cricket league, when inaugurated, started off its first season with a total of eight teams and then, from the next season, jumped off with adding two more additional teams in the run, making the total of 10 teams full of celebrity and entertainment all ready to play the sport they love, which is Cricket.

Whatever the makers thought was truly amazing to collaborate these three areas to make a reality show. The production company made celebrity Cricket League under the title of Marinating Films. Box Cricket League or BCL has been created under the production house of Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms. 

The show is telecasted in Hindi Language and has been released for up to four seasons yet with an episode count of about eighty-nine, although the running time for each season was different from another. Where season one comprised of episodes running for just 22 minutes, seasons 2, 3, and 4 extended their running time to about 45 minutes, 1 hour 22 minutes, and 1 hour 22 minutes, respectively. 

The show was first telecasted on the Sony Entertainment channel back on the 14th of December 2014. It telecasted its season 2 on Colors TV, and seasons 3 and 4 were telecasted over MTV India.

BOX cricket is a concept of playing Cricket in an indoor space involving two teams with around 6 to 8 players. The player in the team has to play the game in a closed area, usually with a net-covered turf. One unique thing about Cricket is that it may or may not involve women players alongside men. The matches played usually get over in a time frame of about an hour. There are general rules which are set before the tournament starts.

Box Cricket, the form of Cricket that is the sole concept behind the establishment of the Box Cricket league, the reality show on television has some exciting regulations and rules associated with it, which we will mention here. There are usually four sets of rules that a player has to follow while playing the sport, and they are-

  • General Batting 
  • Bowling 
  • Dismissal

General Rules 

  • Sport usually consists of 6 to 8 players in a team. 
  • The team’s composition should ensure an equal ratio when women players are involved. 
  • Matches run for about 5 to 12 overs, where each bowler is allowed to bowl for ¼ of the total over. 
  • If anything goes outside the playing area in full, it will be counted as the batsman’s dismissal. 
  • If their nets are involved, rules consider any rebound catches if so happens. 
  • Fall of the wicket will immediately result in penalty runs for the batting team, usually going up to -5
  • The winner of a tie is decided by a super over

Batting rules 

  • When there is a team of 8, the team at batting has seven wickets and can play two batters at a time. 
  • Successive dot balls or misses are considered and categorized under as a dismissal in box cricket. 
  • Runs scored are counted when the batsman is standing inside the crease. 
  • If the ball hits the roof, it is either a dead ball or dismissal. 
  • Sometimes, rebound runs are awarded when the ball hits the roof. 

Bowling Rules 

  • Usually is underarm for female cricketers. 
  • The ball should be bowled from behind the crease. 
  • Sidearm action is banned.

Dismissal Rules

  • Three dots or misses will be categorized under dismissal. 
  • The keeper only has to collect the ball from behind; he cannot stump in front of the stumps.
  • Stumping of a no-ball is allowed in BOX cricket. 
  • Usual rules are followed here also as in classic Cricket.

History and Background 

As discussed earlier in the article, the reality series under the name of Box Cricket League has been released for about 4 back-to-back seasons, which ran for a variable duration and on different channels over the period. Season One for the BOX Cricket League was inaugurated on the 14th of December, 2014, and has 8 teams contested the game. The teams were Chandigarh Cubs, Delhi Dragons, Pune Anmol Ratan, Ahmedabad Express, Kolkata Baabu Moshayes, Jaipur Raj Joshiley, Rowdy Bangalore, and Mumbai Tigers. Many celebrities who are known faces from the Television Industry like Anita Hassanandani, Amit Verma, Chetna Pande, Paras Chhabra, Dheeraj Dhooper, and many others participated. The season had overall 25 episodes, and the final episode for the season telecasted on the 15th of January, 2015. It was Delhi Dragons who won by around 10 wickets.

BCL season 2 was telecasted on the Colors channel in 2016, where two more teams were added to the previous list: Chennai Swaggers and Lucknow Nawabs. Delhi Dragons only became champions for the second time on BCL in a row. The season’s first episode aired on the 5th of March, 2016, ended on the 28th of May and comprised about 24 episodes.

The third season premiered in 2018 and on MTV channels this time. This season was remarkable as the Lucknow nawab team defeated the two-time champions Delhi Dragons and thus, became the champions for the season.

On the 29th of April, 2019, when the fourth season of the series premiered on MTV only. Delhi Dragons had defeated Chennai Swaggers by 17 runs and became the champions again.
