Wimbledon 2021: Djokovic, Murray advance into Second Round


The Flagship event of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), The Wimbledon Championship is currently underway at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The Day 1 of the Championship ended in on a satisfying note for all the top seeds as they were successful in winning in Round 1 and qualify for the Second Round.

Notably, top seeds Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka are not participating in the tournament.


English Tennis Star Andy Murray won his first match at Wimbledon after four years. The last time Murray won was back in 2017. Murray defeated Georgian Tennis Seed Nikoloz Basilashvili by 3-1 sets in the first round. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic too had an easy start at the Wimbledon 2021. He defeated English Tennis Star Jack Draper by a 3-1 sets win.

In what comes to a shocker to Third Seed from Greece Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed was defeated by a straight 3-0 sets by the United States Top Seed Frances Tiafoe. Other top seeds who qualified for the second round were 5th Seed Andrey Rublev and 9th Seed Diego Schwartzman. Both of them found easy wins in the first round.

At the Women’s Singles, top seeds have opted out of the championship. 7th seed I. Swiatek defeated S.Hsieh by two straight-set wins to advance into the second round. 4th Seed S. Kenin defeated Chinese top seed X. Wang by two straight-sets wins. 2nd seed A. Sabalenka defeated M. Niculescu to qualify for the next round.
