Yuvraj practiced tennis and rolling skates in his childhood and was a professional in the sport. After winning a gold medal in skating, his father threw his medal and asked him to focus on cricket.

Yuvraj was sent to Mumbai for advanced coaching and training and got admitted into a notable cricket academy known as Dilip Vengsarkar Cricket Academy. Yuvraj Singh made his debut for the Punjab Cricket team against Orissa at the Ranji Trophy season of 1997-98. He was dismissed for a duck but bounced back in the U-19 format as he scored a brilliant knock of 358 runs against Bihar in the 1999 Cooch Behar trophy final. He was subsequently called back in Punjab’s team for the 1999-00 season of the Ranji Trophy.

Yuvraj scored a mesmerizing knock of 149 against Haryana which led to his selection in India’s U-19 team for the 1999 World Cup. The U-19 World Cup was the turning point for Yuvraj in his career. Yuvraj Singh had a storming international career as he was a consistent part of India’s national cricket team in all three formats of the game. Yuvraj made his debut for India in the ODI format against Kenya on 3rd October 2000 after his successful U-19 World Cup campaign. He was subsequently called into the national team for his test debut against New Zealand in 2003.

Yuvraj earned a name for himself after a fine performance at the Natwest Series against England in 2002. He set up a record partnership with Mohammad Kaif to help India win the series. He remained inconsistent and inactive for a brief period from 2005-07 due to injuries but returned into his original form at the 2007 World Cup.
