Yuzvendra Chahal is an attacking leg spinner with a versatile bowling action. The leggy has got through every opportunity deviating his career with his magical wrist. Right from being the skipper’s favorite to making an Indian debut, Chahal has come through a radical journey of immense struggle and scintillating performance.

Chahal, the young terminator has donned the Indian jersey in limited-overs format whereas represented the Haryana Cricket Team in domestic cricket. He has featured for one of the most successful IPL franchise Mumbai Indians and is currently a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team under Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

Yuzvendra Chahal was born on 30th July 1990 at Jind town in Haryana district. His father KK Chahal is an advocate whereas his mother Sunita Devi is a homemaker. Chahal also has two elder sisters who spent their childhood together. In the early school days, Chahal used to play Chess and was an amateur in the game.

He soon turned out to be a professional in Chess and represented his State to emerge the U-12 National Chess Champion and later represented India at the Chess World Cup in 2003. He is the only Indian cricketer to be a professional in chess and cricket. His interest deviated towards cricket as he failed to find any sponsor for his chess journey.

Yuzvendra Chahal started to pursue a career in professional cricket at the age of 12. Ironically to his current role, Chahal began his cricketing avenue as a medium-pace bowler. After getting hammered in important club fixtures, he decided to switch to spin. He then started practicing leg-spin and is one of the stalwart Indian leg-spinners in the current time.

Chahal’s potent at Chess helped him to read the mind of the batsman and bowl accordingly. He represented his school team in U-14 and U-16 teams. Not impressing the fraternity with his performance in cricket, the leggy sustained on to his abilities and finally made it into the state team to play at a big level.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s glittering performance for his club team at state-run domestic tournaments led to his selection in the Haryana U-19 Team for the Cooch Behar Trophy. Chahal turned his cards with the golden opportunity as he registered clinical bowling performances to emerge as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament (34).

Chahal’s youth performance opened the doors for a brighter tomorrow. The young lad featured in the senior team the following year. Chahal got selected in the Haryana Ranji Trophy team for the 2010-11 season. However, a front-line spin bowling attack at Haryana benched Chahal for the entire season as he didn’t find an opportunity to feature.

Chahal later showed his marvelous spin-bowling performance at the IPL which finally led to his debut. He has been a consistent part of Haryana’s team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T-20 Trophy.

Chahal’s Cooch Behar Trophy performance had already garnered the attention of many cricket analysts and selectors. After a healthy domestic season in 2010, it was time for the wrist-spinner to knock at the doors of IPL. In a breakthrough for Chahal, he was picked by the Mumbai Indians franchise in 2011.

Chahal had a long season for Mumbai as he didn’t find a place in the XI for the entire season. However, on the backdrop of the Champions League, he was selected to feature in the team in absence of regular spin bowlers. Chahal had a good Champions League season as Mumbai emerged victoriously and the leggy registered a figure of 3/9 in the Final.

Chahal then went on to play only a single match for Mumbai Indians in the following two years in presence of regular spinners Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh. He was then released by Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2014 auction as Royal Challengers Bangalore picked him comfortably in the 2014 Pepsi IPL Auction.

Chahal had a marvelous season for Royal Challengers Bangalore as he picked up 19 wickets in the 2016 season to win the Purple Cap Award. He continues to be a part of the southern franchise.

Following his impressive performance at the 2016 edition of IPL, Chahal earned his maiden call for the Indian National Cricket team for the Zimbabwe series. Chahal had a fantastic debut for the national team as he picked up 10+ wickets. Chahal made an ODI as well as a T-20 debut in the same series against Zimbabwe.

His brilliant performance at the Zimbabwe tour helped him retain his spot for the prestigious England tour. Chahal featured in the T-20 series and picked up his first five-wicket haul in T-20 Internationals as he registered a clean bowling figure of 6/25. He went on to continue with his dominance in white-ball cricket as he continued to be a part of the Australian series.

In the Australian series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Chahal achieved yet another milestone by claiming another five-wicket haul against Australia to set a unique record. He ended with a figure of 6/42 which eventually led to his selection in the Indian squad for the World Cup 2019. Chahal made his World cup debut against Sri Lanka.

Chahal had a satisfying World Cup campaign as he picked up 12 wickets in the major league. Later at a series against Australia in 2020, Chahal was replaced as a concussion substitute for injured Ravindra Jadeja. He went on to pick crucial wickets of Steve Smith and Aaron Finch which helped India to win the match and subsequently win the series.

Chahal was selected at the Sri Lankan tour in 2021 but was dropped from the 2021 T20 World Cup squad in UAE.
